I get the same errors when trying to run the create script on SQL 2000, but the script seems to run fine in SQL 2005

I wonder what syntax in the script is specific to 2005?

It'd be nice to have it work with SQL 2000 since many shared hosting places still have this version.

I have a modified sql script for SQL2000. I can't attach it here, so here is what I did:
1. Remove all text: WITH (IGNOREDUPKEY = OFF) ON PRIMARY
2. Replace: varchar(max) with ntext

So far so good. For #2 don't try to replace it with varchar(8000) since SQL2000 has maximum row length of 8060 byte.

I still wasn't able to get the script to run against MSSQL 2000 with these changes. Is there anyone who has a tested/working script they can post ?

The script is specific to SQL 2005. The datatypes of char and varchar in SQL 2005. The in 2005 you can specify "max" instead of the number of allowed characters in the field; in 2000 you have to specify the exact number of characters. I remember when I went to the DevDays when they were rolling it out MS mentioned using this method instead of text to store large string data. Something about optimization in data storage.

There also seems to be a slight change in the way the servers handle CREATE TABLE statements; enclosing the index options in parentheses, and specifiying the filegroup for the indexes. You should be able to use the following code snippets as a guide to fix your script:

--SQL 2005
CREATE TABLE [dbo].[Table1]
(
	[Field1] [int] IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL,
	[Field2] [varchar(max)] NULL,
	CONSTRAINT [PK_Table1] PRIMARY KEY CLUSTERED
	(
		[Field1] ASC
)WITH (IGNORE_DUP_KEY = OFF) ON [PRIMARY]
) ON [PRIMARY]

--SQL 2000
CREATE TABLE [dbo].[Table1]
(
	[Field1] [int] IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL,
	[Field2] [ntext] NULL,
	CONSTRAINT [PK_Table1] PRIMARY KEY CLUSTERED
	(
		[Field1] ASC
	)WITH IGNORE_DUP_KEY = OFF
) ON [PRIMARY]

For reference, here are the links to char and varchar information on the MSDN for SQL 2000 and SQL 2005.

Hope this helps.

I was able to get the script to work properly in SQL 2000 by removing the "WITH IGNOREDUPKEY..." line and changing the varchar(max) to ntext. After making those 2 changes to the script, it ran just fine.

That should help anyone using SQL 2000 to set this up.

Of course, getting Blog Engine to connect to the SQL 2000 database was another story. I had to change the sql.config file a bit. The updated connection string looks like this, and it finally connects:

<add name="BlogEngine" connectionString="Server=ServerName;Database=DBName;UID=IDName;PWD=PWD;" providerName="SQLOLEDB"/>

<p>If you are using the ASP.NET Membership provider, you are set to use existing users.  If you are using the default BlogEngine.NET XML provider, it is time to setup some users.  Find the sign-in link located either at the bottom or top of the page depending on your current theme and click it. Now enter “admin” in both the username and password fields and click the button. You will now see an admin menu appear. It has a link to the “Users” admin page.
