Avoiding Duplication with Test Domains?

I am creating a test domain on my site, but would like to make sure (for SEO purposes really) that my test site is not picked up by the search engines.

I have put the "nofollow, noindex" meta tags in the master page, but don't know enough about the ping services etc...

Do I need to disable these ping services in my test environment? (This would be awkward as it is using the same database at present... I guess this is where each ping service status is recorded... but would disable if required).

Also is there anything else I've missed which should be concidered in a test site?

::: Thanks in Advance :::

You can tell search engines to stay away of your site directly, by modifying robots.txt in the root:

User-agent: *
Disallow: /

Thanks, I'll put that in place now!

Would you advise disabling the SendPings Extension in my test Environment?

Thanks

Every time you publish new post, this extension will send URL of this post to ping services in admin/ping services list. Unless you testing this functionality, you can safely disable/remove extension or simply delete all services from the list. In any case it'll make your test site go silent for the rest of the web.
