Is it possible to remove image.axd?

I am not exactly sure what the use of image.axd is, but it creates a very bad SEO (Search Engine Optimization) effect on the site. Basically one of the best ways to rank an image is to give it a relative name, but using something like image.axd to link to the image make the image's name appear as "image.axd".

Is there any way to turn all existing image.axd links into normal image links? And to change the image uploader to insert regular links instead of image.axd?

I am not at home right now but will look into it later.

I managed to remove it and also removed any past coinsurance of it by running a program to replace image.axd with my website url.
