If you haven't turned on Recaptcha yet, that is a good idea.  The Akismet Filter extension and Stop Forum Spam extensions help too.  A recent blog post on some of this.

Recaptcha helps protect against bots.  There are still people who are manually leaving spam.  Akismet and Stop Forum Spam help with that, as those services are tracking spammers across the internet.

A 3rd option would be to turn on Disqus, and let them handle your comments.  That's an option in the control panel.

Remove the "Powered by" in the master page.

Why does removing the "Powered by" item in the master page reduce comment spam? Is it something that spammers scan for?

Feb 17, 2011 at 11:36 PM

Yes, they look for :

"powered by" + "notify me when new comments are added"

"powered by" "notify me when new comments are added" iphone

happy "notify me when new comments are added" "powered by"

"powered by" "notify me when new comments are added" iphone 2g

"powered by" "notify me when new comments are added"

"notify me when new comments are added" "powered by"

coasta rica "notify me when new comments are added" "powered by"

If my opinion count, if youre BE is for Personal Purposes follow Ben idea Mike.

If youre BE is for Comercial Purposes follow the other idea.

I dont like the idea of removing " Powered By " ... If BE is an Open Source Project why Remove the " Author " ?

Cheers !

Just replace "Powered by BlogEngine.Net" by "BlogEngine.Net"

Thanks guys, I must have my email alerts turned off, I thought you were all ignoring me L

I kind of gathered that those mindless bot builders were targeting BlogEngine, they need to get a real life and use their powers for good. If there are any spammers or virus builders listening, 99% of the people on this forum could probably do better job of it if they wanted. My mother said to me when I was a young punk and had said to her, “I am a great driver, I can go around corners with the wheels screeching” she answered, “So can I!” think about it.

Anyway thanks for your help I will run with dmichaud80’s to begin with and see how it goes.

Thanks again,

For AlenCoder

Do I see spam here?  :)

captcha is a must if you don't want to get your blog spammed like crazy. Also, have your blog moderated. Removing "powered by" is a waste of time
