URL Rewrite Conflict

We installed BlogEngine 2.9 on our dedicated server (Windows 2012, IIS 8). The code is in it's own application in a subdirectory of our website.

We have existing rewrite rules for the main parts of our website which are conflicting with the BlogEngine rewrite rules (BlogEngine URL's are not working). If we remove the original website rules the BlogEngine URL's work fine but this is not an option.

We tried adding a condition to our rewrite rules to disregard the /blog directory but this did not resolve. The problem is clearly the conflicting web.config files but we've tried everything and cannot get them to coexist. Any help would be appreciated!

The problem is related to web.config inheritance. This article helped resolve our problem:
